Introduction to Lake Saif ul Malook

Lake Saif ul Malook is located in the Naran Valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is one of the highest lakes in the country and situated at an elevation of 3242 meters or 10637 feet above sea level. One popular story is about a prince Saif who falls in love with a beautiful fairy princess named Badar Mumtaz or Badi-ul-Jamal. The couple wanted to marry and for this they ran away to the mountains and found shelter in a hidden valley. They said that the lake is named “Saif” in the name of the prince and they also said that the fairy disappeared into the lake after her death.

Second popular story is that King Saif came across this area when he was hunting. He was very much impressed by the lake and decided to build a palace on its shores. Later on the palace was destroyed by flood and since that the lake was known as “Saif ul Malook”.

From base camp towards Ansoo Lake the trek is steeper and challenging. Continue trekking and after 5-7 hours you will reach Ansoo Lake. The lake is famous for its crystal clear water and tear shape, which is said to attract and inspire the prince Saif.
